How Does MOXI™ Differ From Microneedling Treatment?

By: Beauty Coordinators

The team at Body+Beauty Lab has over a dozen medical skin care procedures to choose from in their in Philadelphia, PA. Below, we’ll compare two treatments designed to reduce the signs of aging by stimulating collagen production – MOXI™ and microneedling.

What is MOXI?

MOXI is a fractional laser skin treatment that uses a specific wavelength (1927 nanometers) to gently penetrate the top layer of skin. It’s minimally invasive and works by damaging problematic skin cells that contain too much melanin and lead to hyperpigmentation and other types of skin discoloration.

The goal of the MOXI system is to give you an even skin tone by getting rid of problem cells and giving your body the chance to generate new cells as well as collagen, a protein that helps maintain structure and keeps skin from creasing and sagging.

While there are many laser treatments on the market, MOXI’s laser is designed to be gentle enough for even preventive treatment for those concerned about uneven tone and texture down the road.

How are microneedling treatments different from MOXI?

While microneedling is also used to create clear skin by creating micro-injuries, stimulating new skin cells, and inducing collagen and elastin production, the approach is different. Since it’s not surgical, it’s still considered minimally invasive, but it does involve fine needles penetrating the skin.

Microneedling can also target issues like lines, pores, and stretch marks, improving the clarity as well as the texture of the skin.

The procedure can take between 30 – 60 minutes, and the team at Body+Beauty Lab uses the DermaPen. Clients typically have a serum applied to the skin afterward but can also opt for state-of-the-art platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) treatments, though these require the team to draw blood from your arm.

Redness and slight swelling are common in the 24 hours after treatment, and it typically takes 4 – 6 weeks to see a noticeable difference in skin. That’s because collagen and elastin production takes time. Patients typically need 3 – 6 follow-up sessions every 4 – 6 weeks to see optimal results.

Is MOXI better than microneedling treatment?

Both MOXI and microneedling treatments can help reduce hyperpigmentation, texture issues, and signs of aging. Many patients opt for MOXI because of how gentle the laser is. However, it’s typically not ideal if you are looking to treat severe lines and wrinkles because the laser does not penetrate down to the dermis.

MOXI tends to be the treatment of choice for those with moderate skin tone issues and dullness who want to keep these issues from getting worse. It’s an excellent option for those getting into laser skin care who want to start with a gentle treatment.

Some patients need just one MOXI treatment. However, it’s common to need 3 – 4 treatments about a month apart and then come in yearly for touch-ups. You can also add broadband light (BBL) therapy to MOXI treatments.

Microneedling typically requires more treatments and touch-ups twice a year, but it is more general and can treat multiple problems at the same time over a larger area. It’s most commonly avoided by those who don’t like the idea of needles.
